Foxes

Welcome to Foxes Class

Welcome to the Foxes! We are a warm, nurturing and vibrant class where every child is supported to grow in confidence, communication and independence. We learn through a mixture of structured teaching, sensory exploration, real-life experiences and lots of repetition and visual support to help pupils feel secure and successful.

Our Class Teacher is Mrs Blackmore.

Our Class Teaching Assistants are:
Mrs Gamble, Mrs Sama, Mrs Paneri, Mrs De Souza, Mrs Vaid, Mr J. Powell and Mrs Smith.

We are all looking forward to a very exciting year ahead. We have lots to learn and lots of exploring to do! 🦊

Every Child is an Individual

In Foxes, we celebrate each child as a unique learner. Every child has a personalised curriculum, tailored to their needs, interests and stage of development.

We use PIVATS to assess where each child is working and to set small, manageable and meaningful targets. These targets are reviewed and updated each term so we can track progress closely and celebrate every success — no matter how big or small.

This ensures every child experiences achievement, pride and a sense of belonging in our classroom.

What We Are Learning This Half Term

This half term, our class book is The Jolly Postman.

We will be sharing the story daily through:

  • Sensory story sessions with props and repeated language

  • Role play and turn-taking activities

  • Makaton signing and communication boards

  • Exploring real letters, envelopes and stamps

Linked activities include:

  • Setting up our own Post Office role play area

  • Posting letters around school and delivering messages

  • Mark-making and writing cards and simple letters (at each child’s level)

  • Sorting and matching characters and items from the story

  • Craft activities such as making post bags, postcards and character puppets

Our focus is on communication, joining in, sharing experiences and developing independence at each child’s stage of learning.

Weekly Learning Routine

Day Activity What Children Need
Monday Forest School A warm coat and a change of shoes/boots
Wednesday PE Please wear comfortable clothing such as leggings/joggers and trainers
Thursday Cooking No additional items needed — ingredients are provided

We also use our outdoor area daily, so please make sure all clothing is named.

Everyday Essentials

Please send your child to school with:

  • A water bottle, labelled with your child's name

  • A healthy snack (e.g. fruit, crackers, yoghurt tube), labelled with your child's name

These help children stay hydrated and ready for learning throughout the day.

Communication & Independence

In Foxes, communication is central to everything we do.
We support children using:

  • Makaton signing

  • Visual timetables and photos

  • Objects of reference

  • Intensive Interaction

  • Choice-making and independence routines

We are also developing dressing skills, tidying up, and confidence in daily routines.

Working Together

Parents and Carers can follow our learning journey on Seesaw, where we share photographs, updates and suggestions to support learning at home. This is a safe platform.

If you ever have any questions, please come and speak to us — we are always happy to help.

We are excited to share this story and the adventures it brings. We can’t wait to see our Foxes grow, explore and shine 🦊

Interventions in Foxes Class

At Wolsey House, we are committed to providing a highly personalised and supportive learning environment. In Foxes Class we use a range of targeted interventions designed to help children develop communication, independence, attention, emotional regulation and the foundations for learning.

Each intervention is carefully planned and matched to the individual needs of the children, helping them make meaningful progress at their own pace.

Below is an overview of the key interventions we use:

Intensive Interaction

A one-to-one approach that focusses on building positive relationships, communication and shared attention. It helps children develop early communication skills and feel safe, connected and understood.

Colourful Semantics

A structured language programme that supports children in developing sentence structure, understanding and expressive communication using coloured prompts and visuals.

Sensory Processing Activities

Activities that help children regulate their sensory systems so they feel calm, focused and ready to learn. This may include deep pressure, movement breaks, tactile play and calming sensory input.

Dough Disco

A fun, rhythmic activity using playdough to develop hand strength, finger dexterity, coordination and readiness for writing.

Funky Fingers / Fine Motor Activities

Short, focused tasks designed to improve hand–eye coordination, finger strength and precision, supporting handwriting, dressing skills and independence.

Theraputty

A strengthening activity using resistance putty to develop grip, hand muscles and finger control needed for writing, self-care and tool use.

Music Therapy

Music is used to support communication, regulation, social interaction and emotional expression. Children explore rhythm, vocalisation, instruments and shared musical experiences.

Pen Disco

A motivating, movement-based activity where children use pens to make large, controlled marks to music — developing motor control and pre-writing patterns.

Meditation & Mindfulness

Simple breathing exercises, calming techniques and guided relaxation help children manage emotions, reduce anxiety and build self-awareness.

Bucket Time / Attention Autism

A structured programme designed to develop attention, engagement and shared enjoyment through highly motivating activities delivered in short, fun stages.

Curiosity Boxes

Themed boxes filled with exciting objects that encourage exploration, early problem-solving and communication.

Life Skills

Practical activities that build independence, confidence and functional skills — including dressing, tidying, simple food preparation, hygiene routines and classroom responsibilities.

Cooking

Weekly cooking sessions help develop sequencing, communication, sensory exploration and early maths skills such as counting and measuring.

Massage Therapy

A calming sensory intervention supporting relaxation, body awareness and emotional regulation.

Brain Breaks

Short movement-based breaks that help children refocus, reset and regulate. These may include stretching, dancing, movement games or breathing exercises.

Tac Pac

A sensory communication programme using touch and music to support emotional connection, body awareness and relaxation.

Pre-Phonics

Activities that build early reading readiness, such as listening games, sound discrimination, rhyme, rhythm and attention development.

Zones of Regulation

A framework used to help children recognise and understand their emotions. Through visuals, colour-coded “zones,” and supportive strategies, children learn how to identify how they feel, communicate their needs, and use tools to help them regulate and return to a calmer state. This supports emotional wellbeing, self-awareness and independence.

Each intervention plays an important role in supporting the holistic development of our children. They help us ensure that every child is nurtured, understood and able to thrive in a way that suits their individual needs.

If you would like more information about any of these interventions, please speak to a member of the Foxes team — we are always happy to help.
