Religious Education
Intent - we are fostering the children's interest in R.E. by...
Our primary school curriculum works with the SACRE local agreed syllabus for Leicester City.
Religious Education in our school aims to help children acquire and develop knowledge and understanding of Christianity and the other principal religions represented in Great Britain; encourage and support children to learn about a range of religions and non-religious worldviews whilst also developing the ability to make reasoned and informed judgements about religious and moral issues and enhance their own spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
We believe that it is important for all our pupils to learn from and about religion, so that they can better understand their own beliefs, our school community and the world around them.
Religious Education is taught throughout the school in such a way as to reflect the overall aims, values, and philosophy of the school, using questions such as Who inspires me? Why should we care about our world? What are the deeper meanings of celebrations?
We encourage our pupils to ask questions about the world and to reflect on their own beliefs, values and experiences. We include and promote British values, ensuring that children are aware of their rights and responsibilities as UK citizens.
Our RE curriculum ensures that all pupils are given opportunities to learn about religion and non-religious worldviews in a variety of ways. Our curriculum is designed to encourage creativity, imagination, enquiry, debate, discussion and independence.
Implementation - this is how we teach R.E.
At Wolsey House Primary School the following religions have been selected for study which are presented in the Leicester City Agreed Syllabus:
- Christianity
- Islam
- Judaism
- Hinduism
- Buddhism
- Sikhism
From the syllabus it is required that:-
In the Early Years Foundation Stage the learning outcomes are referenced to Christianity and as appropriate to a range of other beliefs and cultures KS1 - Christianity is studied (and one other principal religion in some depth) KS2 – Christianity is studied (and two other principal religions in some depth).
We value the religious background of all members of the school community and hope that this will encourage individuals to share their own experiences with others. All religions and their communities are treated with respect and sensitivity and we value the links which have, been established between home, school, and a faith community.
We acknowledge that each religion studied can contribute to the education of all our pupils. We promote teaching in Religious Education that places value in open enquiry and first-hand experiences wherever possible for both staff and children.
Impact - this is what our children will have learnt - the knowledge and skills developed in R.E.
Our RE curriculum impacts the pupils in the following ways:
- extended their knowledge and understanding of religions and beliefs
- developed a religious vocabulary and interpret religious symbolism in a variety of forms
- reflected on questions of meaning, offering their own thoughtful and informed insights into religious and secular world-views
- explored ultimate questions of beliefs and values in relation to a range of contemporary issues in an ever-changing society.
Through their R.E. learning, the children at Wolsey House Primary School will be able to make links between their own lives and those of others in their community and in the wider world, developing an understanding of other people’s cultures, religious beliefs and ways of life.
The impact of our RE curriculum is also sought directly from the pupils Questionnaires are used to gather pupils’ voice on this subject and together with summative assessment, action can be taken to further develop the RE curriculum.
At Wolsey House Primary School our children go out into the world with the knowledge and skills to understand the beliefs of others and live respectfully in today’s diverse and ever changing world.
