Safeguarding at Wolsey House

Safeguarding, Health & Safety and Promoting Welfare

The health, safety and welfare of all the people who work or learn at Wolsey House Primary School are of paramount importance. We aim to provide a safe, secure and pleasant working environment for everyone. The Governing Body, together with the Local Education Authority, takes responsibility for protecting the health and safety of all children and members of staff.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and the culture of safeguarding is embedded in every aspect of our work. We expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. We are fully committed to ensuring that consistent effective safeguarding procedures are in place to support families, children and staff at school. All Records of Concerns are passed onto members of staff who are trained as "Designated Safeguarding Leads". Our DSLs can be found here: Wolsey House safeguarding personnel.

Wolsey House offer termly Safeguarding Supervision sessions for staff involved in child protection work. Supervision is a regular one-to-one meeting between the Supervisor and Supervisee in order to meet school, professional and personal objectives. The supervision process is a key part of the safeguarding management system and continuous professional development within the school. Good quality supervision helps to keep the focus on the child and maintains a degree of objectivity, whilst challenging fixed views where they may arise. It also tests and assesses the evidence for assessment and decisions and address the emotional impact of work on safeguarding leads. You can find out more about Safeguarding Supervision by reading the policy here: Safeguarding supervision policy

Child Protection

The school has a statutory responsibility, duty of care and the right to take reasonable action to ensure the welfare and safety of its children. If the school has cause to be concerned that a child may be subject to ill treatment, neglect or any other form of abuse, the school will follow the Child Protection Procedures,

The school will share any concerns it might have about a child in need of protection with other agencies and in particular police, health and Children’s Services. Schools are not able to investigate concerns but have a legal duty to refer them. In most instances, the school will be able to inform the parents/carers of its need to make a referral. However, sometimes the school is advised by Children’s Social Services or police that the parents/carers cannot be informed whilst they investigate the matter. We understand the anxiety parents/carers understandably feel when they are not told about any concerns from the outset. The school follows legislation that aims to act in the interests of the child.

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)

Female Genital Mutilation is a form of child abuse and as such is dealt with under the school's Child Protection/Safeguarding Policy. From 31 October 2015 onwards, regulated health and social care professionals and teachers in England and Wales have a mandatory requirement to report visually confirmed or verbally disclosed cases of FGM in girls under 18 to the police.

Call police on 101 if you have information about FGM.

In an emergency, dial 999.

Prevent Strategy

As part of Wolsey House Primary’s commitment to safeguarding and child protection we fully support the government's Prevent Strategy.

What is the Prevent Strategy?

The Prevent strategy is a government strategy designed to stop people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism. It:

  • responds to the ideological challenge we face from terrorism and aspects of extremism, and the threat we face from those who promote these views
  • provides practical help to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism and ensure they are given appropriate advice and support
  • works with a wide range of sectors (including education, criminal justice, faith, charities, online and health)

Attendance

All lateness and absences are recorded by the office. Reasons will be sought for all absence or lateness. Parents will always be informed of concerns around attendance and lateness at the earliest point. If attendance concerns continue the school will refer concerns to the Education Welfare Officer.

Please click on the page entitled Safeguarding Documents and make time to read our policies. Do not hesitate to contact the school should you have any questions.

Parents/carers send their children to school with the expectation that the school provides a secure environment for their children to flourish. A wide range of measures are in place to ensure that children are protected. We ensure that children learn in a safe, caring and enriching environment. Children are taught how to keep themselves safe, to develop positive and healthy relationships, how to avoid situations where they might be at risk including by being exploited.
